Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah, advised, “If you want to be healthy and live to one hundred, do Qigong”
What is Qigong?
The practice of qigong has been present in China for several thousand years, and the actual term, qigong, literally energy (Qi) skill (Gong), first appeared in the book Ana of Pure and Bright School, written by the Daoist priest Xu Xun during the Jin dynasty (265-420 CE). Definitions of qigong are abundant and the one I prefer the most for its simplicity and shortness is: “Qigong is the skill of body-mind exercise that integrates body, breath, and mind adjustments into one.” Chinese Medical Qigong, 2010
Qigong is one of the most rapidly growing alternative healthcare systems in the United States and elsewhere around the world. It seems to be rivaling other alternative healing systems like yoga, tai chi chuan, pilates, chiropractic, ayurveda, acupuncture, herbal and nutritional medicine, and the numerous massage modalities. For this reason, and for the need for qualified teachers and practitioners, I have developed a basic qigong 100 Hour course for those who want to go deeper into qigong for personal health reasons, or because they want to develop professionally as a Qigong Teacher.
The above quotation and other information was sent to me and other qigong teachers by Bill Douglas, founder of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. It points to how qigong has become so widely recognized, that it is promoted as a powerful healing modality on mainstream TV by a qualified medical doctor and a very popular TV host. My qigong training program is a response to this growing popularity of qigong and for the requirement of qualified teachers on a national scale.
Qigong Certification Course 100 Hours
My course is an interactive program (not an online course) whereby students are given the core study material and supplement it with their own purchased books on qigong and related topics. Students have reading and writing assignments on the subjects, viewing of DVD’s on qigong, and unlimited email contact with me for questions, support and professional guidance.
The structure of the program is divided into four main study areas. Each area has reading assignments or DVDs to view. Questions accompany each study area which have to be answered in writing.
- Foundation studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine: Five Elements Theory, Organs and Meridians, Three Treasures, Qi, Dantians, and specific acu-points.
- Medical Qigong: A core group of exercises (over 30 exercises) are presented in DVDs which provide a solid foundation in qigong, including external qi healing, self-massage, stationary and dynamic movements, etc. Some of the forms are rare to find, like the Pre-Heaven Taiji Ruler, Primordial Wuji Qigong, or Compassionate Buddha Qigong.
- Daoism and Daoist Meditation: To study qigong without an introduction to Daoism and Daoist meditation is only to partially study qigong. The course will introduce the student to important Daoist concepts and practices, especially a core meditation practice called Zuowang, literally meaning to sit and forget. Students are required to purchase at least one book for this section.
The course is available for local students for $600 and the distance learner cost is $450.
Distance learners receive the same information as the local learners. The fee is payable in full at start of program, and is non-refundable. Payment is with personal checks, money orders, International money orders, or Western Union. I am now accepting Paypal as a way of payment, but I only encourage this method for students who are unable to pay by check, or money order. A slightly higher fee is requested for those using Paypal. Students from throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico, England, Malta, French Caribbean, Chile, Australia and elsewhere have taken the course. Upon finishing the program, the student receives a Certificate of Completion stating that the person satisfactorily completed a course of qigong studies with me. For local students this certificate is generally recognized by the National Qigong Association [ www.nqa.org ] as a valid course of training for their Professional Qigong Teacher’s Certification program. Distance students may need additional personal, direct studies with me, or one of my senior graduated student/teachers, or an affiliate qigong teacher to receive NQA certification. ”Though certification is internal to the NQA as there is presently no national standard.” [quote from NQA web page] Students may enroll in the certification program at any time. Additional hours may be added onto the 100 hours in areas, like assessment and prescriptions, or Daoist meditation. An extra fee would apply to these hours.
SPECIAL RETREAT OFFER: Students who are enrolled in the Qigong Certification program and actively working on the required coursework, may attend the annual May retreat with a $100 discount. 2012 Retreats
More about how it works: Student progress is monitored through frequent emails, personal contacts for local students ( 40 classes and 3 one hour private sessions), and completion of the training questions. Progress is evaluated via these questions, and there is no final exam. Note: This is not an online course. In addition, students receive a set of five DVDs, and a very complete set of relevant articles, and information sheets. The following are the required texts to read. Students purchase these independently of the course fees.
- Roger Jahnke, The Healing Promise of Qi
- In the Daoism section, one book is required to purchase from a list of recommended books.
The program can be completed in 3- 6 months. However, often it takes the average student one year to finish the course.
At completion of studies, the student will receive a certificate of completion for the 100 Hour course of qigong studies with Michael Rinaldini, Director of Qigong & Daoist Training Center, Sebastopol, CA. Students will also be granted the title of Qigong Teacher, Entry Level.
